CannesLion Day 1

Today was the first day of the festival and I was excited yet nervous for what the festival had in store for me! At first I was overwhelmed, but after walking around for a few minutes I felt right at home! The first thing that caught my eye was the Youtube area; this is where I hung out until my first seminar started.
The first seminar I attended was GoViral: Engaging Generation Social with guest speaker Rene Rechtman. I thought this was a great way to start off my experience at Canneslion because his seminar pertained directly to my generation; the generation social.”  A few things I learned from this seminar were:
-       48% check facebook when they wake up and of that 28% use their mobile device
-       There are more mobile users than computer users currently
-       “Social content is the new battlefield”
To sum up his entire seminar he said:
“Ads are content & content are apps
Advertisements are media & media are apps
                                                            Conversation is media”
The second seminar I attended was Zenithoptimedia: Live Information is Beautiful with guest speakers Steve King, Stephan Messer and Simon Rogers. I chose to attend this because it was about engaging in data and I am somewhat interested in the data collecting in advertising. I did not enjoy this seminar as much as I hoped, however I think it is because I was lost in what they were talking about because I know so little about the subject to begin with. The main point I got from the seminar was that data can tell you a story by visualizing the data, which can help you market to your consumers more effectively.

The third seminar I attended was my favorite, it was the Text Appeal: Culture Shocks: Porn , Youth & Brands with guest speaker Elliot Polak and Cindy Gallop.
I enjoyed seeing the different types of sex ads different countries produced because each country has its boundaries and it was interesting to see what was considered socially acceptable in different countries.  Some ads I enjoyed or particularly remembered seeing were:
-       Share the Rainbow Taste the Rainbow: Italy (dirty & humorous)
-       Promoting to wear a condom, umbrella: Kenya  (informative)
-       Intercom asking for sexual favor: Spain  (funny)
-       Butter ad- Brazil (too dirty)
My favorite part about the seminar was what Cindy had to talk about! She talked about her website MakeLoveNotPorn ;which takes the porn myths and makes the real truth. A few notes I wrote down about her was:
-       Average age of first porn is age 9
-       That porn has become the new sex education
-       That the fundamental human behavior is sexuality
-       Consumer dynamics & Behavior can lead to a new form of creativity
-       Sex is the topic nobody wants to talk about, but she is super open to it!
Overall, I had a great first day after attending 3 seminars, 2 speakers and hours of networking I found my day to be a success !
