Commercial Critiques

Commercial Critiques

Long Live PS3 http://youtu.be/mdWkKKSckNk
This commercial is so well put together. The first time I watched it, I enjoyed             it but did not pick up on half of the craft. However, after I watched the ad a few times and looked at it frame by frame, I noticed all the small details that made the ad so amazing. The music was exceptional. The music progressed as the story line progressed. The story builds up to Michael, the gamer. I was unsure what the ad was for as it opened with soldiers, but it was artistic to look at the ad through their perspective. I thought it was genius the way the             ad included all different currencies at the beginning of the story, which represented all of the various worlds gamers live in. It is such a simple idea, but made complex by the use of all characters and world’s video games originate from.

This commercial was another commercial I didn’t understand the full affect until I dissected the ad into each frame. When looking at each frame, I was able to hear each person’s story and in the end put them all together to understand their purpose. The message is extremely powerful because the speakers are normal people speaking out on their own, not acting for the camera. This brings the authenticity into the story and makes their story very personal you take a closer look at each character, as they talk they are looking up as if they are looking for a higher power. The direction was almost like making a full circle, always looking in every direction, which creates this bubble of an environment. Although we don’t know the language they are speaking, the action sends the message and if you were to remove the words, I think the message would be just as powerful. The craft and the culture run seamlessly together to create a strong and meaningful story.

Nike: I would run to you http://youtu.be/iozZTJB2XOw
This ad kept me entertained and engaged in the commercial for a few key reasons. The first is the song the couple was singing was catchy and they completed each other’s lyrics. I thought it was clever to have the lyrics actually tell the story with the help of their running actions. Nike positioned themselves perfectly because one person is decked out in Nike gear and is obviously an Athlete, but the man is not an “athlete.” By having these two characters symbolize Nike, it sends the message that you don’t have to be a “athlete” to wear Nike. By showing the two opposites in a way, it broadens their target audience. I thought the story telling was done artistically but with the flavor of Nike; it was athletic yet humorous all at the same time. The music was a great choice because it is an upbeat and happy song that people remember.

Visa Olympics London 2012: Nadia Comaneci http://youtu.be/fw9nhdcVuJM
This ad is so simple but so amazing. The most valuable part of the commercial is the dialogue. Morgan Freeman’s voice and tone is so powerful it conveys the appropriate feeling for this incredible story. Just the words, “people had cheered for good, cheer had cheered for great, and people had even cheered for incredible, but until Nadia Comenaci scored the first perfect ten in Olympic history, nobody had cheered for perfect” are so powerful because they are such simple words, but when they build upon each other, the word “perfect” says it all. In the Olympics everyone strives for perfection and the fact that it was achieved, hits home to many. I also thought the video footage from when she won during the Olympics ads authenticity to the video along with life. The sepha color shows the history behind it but also a different point of view because we are used to colored ads. This is an ad I will always remember because of the voice , words and action.

Canal + A bear rug http://youtu.be/Edeu4mz_tzg
This commercial is great! The music at the beginning starts with a battle scene on set of a movie. I think its brilliant to use the bear’s skin as the director; it’s almost like a joke. The wardrobe on the set of the movie is just spot on and the music was too. It looked like the craft was just so effortlessly incorporated into the commercial. The bear is so realistic it’s amazing. I liked the humor in the commercial as well. The concluding minutes of the commercial is awesome because the story comes full circle as the bear is the carpet in the house, not the director.

Experiential Paper: Adventures in Cannes

                                    Experiential Paper: Adventures in Cannes
Since the day Dr. Reichert spoke to my ADPR3100 class, I have been counting down the days until the Cannes Study Abroad Program. After persuading my dad to let me go and figuring out how I would pay for this trip, I couldn’t help but obsess about my summer plans in France. I had no idea what to expect, I just knew that the south of France was absolutely beautiful. Luckily, I had a friend that went on the previous years program and she could fill me in on the program. Every time I asked her a new question, she would go on and on about the program giving me pointers here and there. I remember her telling me about The Carlton and The Palais, but at that time, these names had no significance to me.  She gave me great advice and helped me feel prepared for this amazing adventure. One thing I do distinctly remember her telling me was to buy your train tickets to Cannes everyday to avoid the fines.
When I first got to Juan Les Pin, a few of the girls I met said that there friends that went last year never bought the train tickets to Cannes and they never got caught. Hearing these words made me reconsider actually buying the train tickets. It wasn’t that they were expensive because they were only 3.60 euros two way, but money does add up. My thought process was I could either pay the train ticket fee daily, or save that money to buy a nice dinner on the beach one night. Although tempting, I decided it wasn’t worth risking getting caught and having to pay the 35 euro fine.
When the festival began, I quickly realized I was one of the few people that actually bought their train ticket everyday. When I would ask my friends if they bought a ticket, the universal response was always “No, I didn’t have time, ops.” Everyday, I would get on the train expecting someone on train security to check my ticket, but they never did. By the end of the week, I was annoyed that I had been paying for my ticket because it had never been checked.
On Saturday, I rode the train to Cannes for the last time. I contemplated not paying, but chickened out and paid for a one-way ticket; hoping I would stay out after the closing ceremony.  However, my plans changed and Lindsay, Conley and I decided to take the last train back to Juan Les Pin to meet Meghan for dinner. We were about to miss the last train, so instead of paying for the train ticket, we just ran onto the train. As the train started, I noticed a man dressed in the train security outfit walk toward our group of girls. I freaked out and told Lauren (she paid for her ticket) that I was going to the restroom; basically to hide. Conley, Lindsay and I all walked very fast in the opposite direction as the man. However, Conley wasn’t fast enough and the man asked her to get her ticket out and get her “groups” tickets as well. Conley told the man she would go get her ticket and ran away! At this point, I was basically running in the opposite direction searching for a bathroom to hide in. I went up stairs, then downstairs, then upstairs then downstairs as I traveled through the train. Lindsay and I kept saying, “ stay away from me, go somewhere else!” because we didn’t want him to catch us, however Conley, Lindsay and I kept running into each other. We were running as if someone was trying to kill us! Eventually, we all ran into each other and decided we had to get off at the first stop. As we were impatiently waiting for the train to make its first stop, Lindsay and I kept looking at each other scared out of our minds that we were going to get caught. Thank goodness, the train made its first stop and we sprinted out of the train into the streets. After we caught our breath, we realized we were going to have to walk from Gulf Juan to Juan Les Lin in our wedges and cocktail dresses. As we were walking, I received a text from Lauren that said,” Heads up, the man is waiting outside the restroom for you.” I read this text to Conley and Lindsay and we all laughed. What would have happened if I actually hid in the restroom? Our walk only took about 45 minutes, but it was great because we got a chance to reflect on our entire week as well as our crazy train experience. The moral of the story is PAY FOR YOUR             TRAIN TICKET!

day 6

We started our day off at the Microsoft experience center. I really enjoyed this because it was a hands on experience. We got to learn about all the new technology. The first thing we went to was the virtual car for Nissan. I thought this was so cool because with body movements the car responds to you as if you were infront of the actual car. I think the technology was called biometrics or something like that. I think this could completely change the way we purchase things in the future. With the same technology, they also have a virtual dressing room! Not only does it dress you but it takes your measurements in a very detailed way. These measurements can make your shopping experience so much easier! It can make online shopping much easier and because you are able to see what the outfit looks like on you, I think return rates would decrease.  I also thought enjoyed learning about the Nokia phones because Nokia completely missed the smart phone era and its nice to see them coming back with an awesome phone! I thought some of the features were much cooler than some features the iphone has and to compete with the iphone, they need to be bigger and better.
After our tour around the experience center, I asked a few questions and gave a guy my business card, the same guy I ended up going to dinner with that same night! I would LOVE to intern for microsoft in seattle, so I made a BIG effort in impressing them!

The seminar I went to was a waste of my time. It was hosted by GREY and I was excited because I met a few people from GREY the day before. I was very disappointed because there was NO content, just BLONDIE talking and singing. They guy conducting the interview pretty much just talked about himself and blondie sang.

day 5

I was looking forward to this day all week because I wanted to hear Selena Gomez talk about us Millennials. However I was very disappointed because she was very shy, didn’t want to be there and she didn’t answer any of the questions she was asked. I am however looking forward to downloading her new app she created. It’s an app that brings back the value of photographs. Instead of just keeping the pictures we take on our iphones or putting them on facebook, we can print them! I also enjoyed the President of MTV speaking about our generation. He said that MTV was the Millennial’s channel and I couldn’t agree more. I grew up watching MTV and to this day I still watch it!

The best seminar of the entire festival was BBDO’s: Everything counts. I loved this because it wasn’t about their company or a question answer session; it was dissecting and analyzing real commercials.   3 different commercials and 3 different people breaking them down to the simplest form to critique them. I found this super helpful because I have never thought to look at a commercial frame by frame and analyze each frame; I’ve just looked at the big picture. The three commercials they chose were ones they thought would win awards at the festival.
  • Greg Hahn picked Long Live PS3 by Doytch LA
  • Josy Paul picked I am Mumbi
  • Paul brazier picked Canal+

day 4

My favorite seminar by far today was  Microsoft Advertising: Device Love:Where Technology and Creativity Converge. Microsoft talked about the new technology they are using to make awesome products. One thing they focused on in particular was the X box. They wanted to market the x box as not just a gaming device but a gaming device with multiple uses. Now the x box can be used to stream Netflix, browse the internet and play Dvds.Chris Capossela, the chief marketing Officer for Microsoft spoke a lot about their leading products such ad Windows 8,Xbox and Skype. He talked about the 7 principles of marketing and how they incorporate them. An important quote Chris said was," Living and breathing the customer journey, its important to build correct products, where your different  and where it works!"This quote conveys the message that they know exactly what they have to do in order for their company to be successful and they are a very successful company so it makes sense!  Some new products they talked about were
  • x box smart glass- allows you to use your tablet as a remote control
  • cell phone challenge- show that their phone is better than an iPhone
  • metro style -across multiple screens
  • windows 8-opening this winter
Another thing I enjoyed was the Mashable forum called A day in the Future: Media & Marketing in the connected era. Adam Ostrow , the executive editor talked about the past of social media and how it has emerged today. I enjoyed this forum because I follow Mashable on twitter and make it a goal to read their stories a few times a week. Its a great way to stay in touch with the new technologies on the market! Some interesting facts he stated were
  • youtube has 3 billion users
  • Facebook has 900 million users
  • twitter has 400 million users

Day 3

Today I started my day much later than expected, but happened to make it to the two seminars I really wanted to go to; Facebook & Youtube!  It just so happens that these are the two websites I most frequently visit.  The first seminar I attended was The Psychology and Creativity of Sharing hosted by Facebook.  I was expecting everyone to be at the seminar and I was correct because even though I got into the theater early, there were no seats to be found. I had to go to the overflow room, which to me took away from the seminar. Paul Adams, Global Head of Brand Design started the seminar by opening with a few words then walking off stage. I thought I missed something he said, but I think he got nervous or forgot what to say so he walked off stage. I was not as impressed with the seminar as I thought I would be. I did enjoy Paul’s information he shared with us. He said, “ we live in an invisible network” which is so true; Facebook!  He talked about how we are most influenced by our friend groups. Most people have different friend groups, but they all have something in common because you are the person in between. He said even though we all have thousands of Facebook friends, we are only influenced by our closest friends. He talked about the 6 degrees of separation, but said it is much more like 4 degrees now. I think that is so true, especially with the rise of social media platforms. We are all connected by someone or somehow and Facebook allows you to make that connection! He talked a lot bout how people share. He asked the question, “ Why do people share” and the answer is simple: to form an identity and to build relationships.  He said that he thinks Facebook is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution. I don’t know if I agree with that 100% but because of Facebook, many things have changed.

I really enjoyed the Youtube seminar How online Video powers creative innovation. There were 5 guests on this panel, but one in particular stood out to me; Damian Kulash, singer from the band OK GO. The seminar started off with an awesome Youtube video that basically combined various videos from videocameras found in public. For example, there were people stealing things, people fighting, people hugging, people hooking up and many more. It was a great introduction to the seminar because it was actually an advertisement for Coca Cola. Just this video showed the creativity behind the platform Youtube. The band OK GO uses Youtube to share their music, which I think is a great idea! Not only is Youtube FREE but there are more content on Youtube than ever on TV! They gave some  crazy stats on Youtube, but I don't remember them, what I do remember is that it has an insane amount of people visit it per day. I am what you could say "a youtube junky," so I understand why so many people use this site. It is also a great place for creativity to be shared. OK GO's music videos are always creative . For example: watch this video of OK GO.  Something I think is very interesting and smart that Youtube has is a thing called true view.  True view allows you to skip the advertisement that plays before your Youtube video after watching about 30 seconds. I think that today many people feel bombarded with advertisements and that is why they don't want to watch them. However, if you are given the choice to watch the ads and be in control, you have a higher likelihood of actually watching the ads. Youtube says they have the data to prove that it's true, but I know that I skip the ads every time because I am on Youtube to watch a music video, not to watch ads.  S

Day 2

Today was a very busy and exciting day! I started my morning off by going to my first Tech Talk called Creative Realities: Bridging the Virtual and Psychical worlds. I thought it was pretty entertaining because we learned about the new and upcoming technology in our world such as robots! After that I went to The Seven Ideas workshop by Patrick Collister. This was my least favorite class so far. I was pretty bored and felt that his material was almost common sense, however I did learn a few important things such as:
- The 4 big questions:  What do you want to say, who do you want to say it to, why should they be interested and how do you want them to respond
- The 7 ideas: The presenter, the demonstrator, the problem/solution, the analogy, the inversion, borrowed interests and the slice of life( insight)

My third class of the day I found worth my time. This was the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Can Your Idea Change the World? This seminar was all about creativity. The point of it was not to learn about advertising, but to learn that creativity is used in every field and you can be inspired by anyone or anything! There were two guest speakers; Jason Aramuru and Antonio Avila. Jason is the CEO of re:char and Antonio is a professor in South America. They both used their creativity to create something magical. They " reinvented the toilet" for developing countries using either biodegradable resources or recycled S***. I was inspired by their creativity to develop something that can change the world!

I also went to Global Brands VS Global Celebrities hosted by Sapienitro. The question was, who is a better marketer and after the panel, I concluded that the Celebrities are because they have a unique connection to the celebrity that they can't get with a brand. I also liked this seminar because I am a BIG House fan and I got to meet Omar Epps!

The last seminar I went to was my FAVORITE thus far! It was a panel about the Visa Olympics campaign by Visa/TBWA. I didn't just like this  seminar because  Nadia Comanecie was on the panel, but for so many other reasons.
why I loved this seminar
-  Learned about the process of the campaign
-  audience was entertained by showing us commercials from the campaign
- showed us the world premiere of Nadia's commercial ( perfect 10)
- talked about the power and influence of social media
-  great insight into the industry and their company
- learned why some things works and why others did not

After the seminar, I went to meet Nadia with two other people! We met her and then I introduced myself to  Patrick O'Neill, Executive  Creative Officer at TBWA and Antonio Lucio, Global Chief Marketing of Visa. I mingled and gave them my business card and he put me in contact with their recruiter!

I enjoyed our talk with the woman from Ad Age at the Goggle sandbox also! She was very pro girl power , which was nice to learn about the female side of the industry because we are so outnumbered. A key thing we talked about was how in the next few years how much more difficult it will be for us girls to get jobs in the industry because so many other girls will be graduating. I also liked learning about her journey that brought her to her career now!
